Op de vooravond van het nieuwe jaar ziet U in deze laatste bijdrage een compiliatie van schapendrijvers, herders en schapen in vervlogen tijden.
De sport werd enthousiast beoefend voor onze periode en zal dat ongetwijfeld ook na ons nog worden gedaan.

The Rocky Mountains
Prijzengeld voor de winnaar: 10 000 dollar. Per trial wel te verstaan.
Scott Glen, Southern-Alberta, Canada is professioneel schapendrijver zoals ook zijn collega's Allistair Mac Rae en Jack Knox.
In de lange donkere Canadese winters maakt hij zijn honden klaar voor de grote kampioenschappen in de Verenigde Staten. Zijn ingeweken schots-amerikaanse collega's doen hetzelfde.
Gezien de enorme afstanden voltrekt het leven van een beroeps zich in de zomer en vroege herfst "on the road". In zijn camper reist Scott het continent af, net als vele andere handlers, met een paar goed voorbereide collies. Wedstrijdklaar.
O.m. Wyoming, Washington (state), en Montana zijn in de periferie van de Rocky Mountains de schapenstaten van de USA. De ranch sheep zijn veelal zelf voorzienend, en zoals ook
Soldier Hollow Classic in het dorpje Midway Utha ( vlakbij Twin peaks) is gemeten naar toeschouwers aantal, de grootste, vorige editie waren er tijdens de 3 daagse countryfair-trial zo'n 28 000 betalende toeschouwers.
Afstand voor Scott (thuis-Utha), zo'n slordige 1300 km. Winnen doe je niet zomaar.
Inschrijvingen gebeuren op uitnodiging. Zonder geloofsbrieven geen run. Ook Europese top handlers worden betrokken: hetzij om te jureren, hetzij om deel te nemen.
U ziet Scott met Don op 2 wedstrijden. Soldier Hollow (2014) en het Amerikaans kampioenschap (2013)
De merino kruisingen in Utha zijn stug en 'wachten' telkens op de hond, tenminste als hij doorwandelt, de "kerstbomen" geven richting om een mooie lijn te behouden.
Pennen op wieltjes.
Telkens correct opgezet door cowboy/girl en hond ziet U in run 2 Scott en Don opnieuw.
Don "tient la route" om het in mooi vlaams te zeggen. Continentale schapen met continentale handling.
Gairloch en District sheepdogtrials
Elk jaar organiseert het Gairloch en district trial committee , althans de laatste 41 jaar, onder leiding van Donald Grant een open wedstrijd schapendrijven
Er is moeilijk een meer pittoreske plek te vinden om dit evenement te organiseren.
Gairloch, gelegen in het graafschap Ross-shire, 900 inwoners aan de noord-westkust van Schotland is een oud vissersdorpje dat in de zomer volop inzet op de vele toeristen uit vele buitenlanden.
Aangetrokken door de woestheid en puurheid van de Schotse westkust met de atlantische Oceaan als steeds terugkerende metgezel, zet het dorpje tijdens de zomer volop in op de overzeese interesse; restaurants , b&b's, golfclub en de traditionele trial in july.
Vorig jaar waren er zo'n 300 toeschouwers.
Handlers, voornamelijk afkomstig uit de Highlands en de eilanden Mull, Skye en Lewis maar ook steeds meer vanuit Noord-Ierland nemen het tegen elkaar op.
Bij inschrijving wachten hun 3 nerveuse North Country Cheviots maar ook een fles single malt whisky, aangeboden door de familie Fosters, lokale hydro energieboeren met vestigingen over het hele land.
In onze selectie ziet U 2 runs.
Het veld, vlak in aanloop, stijgt snel tot een steile wand waar de honden kunnen kiezen voor een paadje links of rechts om achter de schapen te komen. Zij die kiezen om door de varens te knalllen, zijn al snel het spoor bijster of de planten vertragen de hond zodanig dat een goede run al snel onmogelijk wordt. Het is zaak hond en schapen "op het juiste spoor " te houden.
Bij de pen is beter ze niet éénmaal laten rond te lopen want dan weten de jaarlingen dat er steeds een vluchtweg is. De hond raakt moe en weg zijn de punten.
Run 1 loopt niet altijd even vlotjes.
In run 2 ziet u Heamish Mclean, helaas op 21 november jongstleden overleden, terwijl hij op 82 jarige leeftijd nog een jonge hond wedstrijd klaar trachtte te maken voor het nieuwe nursery seizoen.
De wedstrijd kadert in de prekwalificatie voor de Scottish National.
Het kan groot, het kan klein
België organiseerde 3 x het Europees kampioenschap Schapendrijven. In de jaren 90 in Hamont (97) en later nog in Antwerpen (2013)
In 2003 was er het kampioenschap op het militaire domein van Schaffen. Het glooiende megaveld, bood een uitstekend panorama, voor zowel deelnemers als toeschouwers.
De wedstrijd staat te boek als de grootste publiekstrekker die het evenement in Europa kende.
De ISDS afgevaardigen stonden met grote ogen te kijken naar zoveel publieke belangstelling.
Zo'n 7000 toeschouwers waren aanwezig op het fantastische veld. Ondanks de moeizame start, organisatorisch en praktisch (de regen zorgde voor extra werklast en druk) groeide de 3 daagse wedstrijd uit tot een groots evenement. Op zondag waren er maar liefst een 100 tal helpers actief: Wedstrijdhelpers, catering, inkom, stuarts, parkingverantwoordelijken, enz, enz.
De winnaar werd uiteindelijk Mosse Magnusson uit Zweden met Flinn
Flinn kwam uit de lijnen van Johnny Wilson Spot en Rob, op dat moment ook in Schotland aan de top.
De mogelijkheid om dagelijks honden te trainen, het landschap ideaal voor de sport,
Met Jim en Davey was hij vrij snel ook daar succesvol. Later volgden nog tal van andere honden.
De Glen Lyon hill trial, gelegen in het Natuurpark de Trossachs, is een klepper.
Let U op de duur van de outrun (2m30sec) en de scherpte van de Cheviot hoggs (ongedekte jaarlingen)
Fysiek ongetrainde honden maken niet de minste kans. Het V-max gehalte moet hoog zijn. Super snelle reactie van hond en handler zijn vereist. Tijd om na te denken is er niet.
Mooie variatie op het thema is de shoot met touw en de kleine cirkel waarbinnen de 4 Cheviots moeten worden geshed.
De wedstrijd kadert in de prekwal voor het Schots nationaal kampioenschap.
In het 2 de fragment ziet U Mosse en Don in de finale van het nationaal nursery kampioenschap 2019.
De blackface hoggs zijn bepaald onvoorspelbaar, maar Mosse en Don behouden hun cool tot op het einde.
De pen is magnifiek met een elegant, bijna als een hoovercraft bewegende Don. Flankend als het nodig is, zonder echter teveel ruimte te geven om druk te houden en vooruit komend als het wordt gevraagd om ze te pennen.

Er bestaan in de topsport een aantal Mo's van wereldklasse.
Lange afstandsloper uit de UK met Ethiopische roots Mo Farah is er zo één. Hij won maar liefst 4 olympische titels op de 5 en 10km en werd 6 maal wereldkampioen, maar misschien nog bekender is Mo Salah, Egyptische topspits uit Liverpool. Hij won met zijn team o.m. de landstitel (de laatste dateerde van 30 jaar geleden) en de Champions league.
Het schapendrijven kende ook een Mo van wereldklasse: Ian Brownlie"s Mo.
De carriére van Mo startte weinig overtuigend.
Ondanks het feit dat ze zich in haar regio kon kwalificeren voor het Schots nursery kampioenschap (de beste 5 deelnemers van de 9 regio's ontmoeten elkaar het eerste weekend van maart in de finale) was haar run in deze finale catastrofaal.
Mo slaagde er niet in de schapen te liften aan de startpaal. Niet echt de gedroomde start van een toekomstige trialcarriére.
Ian Brownlie, voltijds herder, zag het als een accident de parcours en bleef wel geloven in het potentieel van zijn kleine teef.
De rest is geschiedenis.
Mo won ontelbare open trials, geen evidentie in het UK, won One man and his dog en won de International in 2013, het hoogst haalbare.
Ian, tot vorig jaar de nationale voorzitter ISDS voor Schotland, is ondanks zijn hoed verre van een cowboy als het op handlen aankomt. Vele malen lid van het Schots team en reeds winnaar van de International in 2012 met Gus voor hij het kunstje nog eens overdeed een jaar later.
Tophonden kunnen het traag en kunnen het snel ...
In de fragmenten ziet U Mo op 2 wedstrijden.
Tijdens de eerste - trage - run, dubbele outrun, in het kader van One man and his dog heeft Mo af te rekenen met een uitermate eigenwijs schaap. De hele run is een beheerste strijd waarbij Mo de "cool" en het geduld op verbluffende wijze bewaart. Het vakmanschap van Ian en de jarenlange ervaring van Mo in dagelijkse werksituaties brengen de test tot een goed einde.
In de 2 de - snelle - run zijn de omstandigheden, het weer, het terrein, en de schapen ook niet van de poes.
De kleur van de schapen doet vermoeden dat de condities in de opzetpen eerder zompig zullen zijn geweest en met grote souplesse, gehoorzaamheid en 'beheersing op snelheid' slaagt Mo er in om de 4 blackface ooien de juiste sturing te geven om uiteindelijk de wedstrijd te winnen, ondanks het schoonheidsfoutje bij het splitsen van de ongemerkte schapen.
Gezien de schichtigheid van de schapen werd door de organisatoren gekozen voor een shoot en de cirkel is al helemaal een overbodige luxe.

Prix en argent pour le gagnant : $10,000. C'est-à-dire par concours.
Scott Glen, du sud de l'Alberta, au Canada, est un conducteur professionnel comme ses collègues Allistair Mac Rae et Jack Knox.
Au cours des longs hivers canadiens sombres, il prépare ses chiens pour les grands championnats des États-Unis. Ses collègues écossais-américains font de même.
Le Wyoming, l'État de Washington et le Montana se trouvent à la périphérie des montagnes Rocheuses, les États ovins des États-Unis. Les moutons du ranch sont pour la plupart autosuffisants, et comme en Australie, souvent des croisements de mérinos, durcis, résistants aux intempéries (froid ou chaud) et ayant une volonté propre.
Le concours Soldier Hollow Classic dans le village de Midway Utha (près de Twin Peaks) est, mesuré par le nombre de spectateurs, le plus grand. A la dernière édition il y avait environ 28 000 spectateurs payants pendant les 3 jours de la foire-exposition du pays.

Les croisements de mérinos à Utha sont rigides et "attendent" le chien à chaque fois, du moins lorsqu'il continue sa promenade, les "arbres de Noël" donnent la direction pour garder une belle ligne.
Concours de Gairloch et District
Chaque année, le comité du concours de Gairloch et du district, au moins depuis 41 ans, sous la direction de Donald Grant, organise un concours ouvert pour conduite de troupeau.
Il est difficile de trouver un endroit plus pittoresque pour organiser cet événement.
Gairloch, situé dans le comté de Ross-shire, 900 habitants sur la côte nord-ouest de l'Écosse, est un ancien village de pêcheurs qui, en été, est très populaire auprès des touristes de nombreux pays étrangers.
A l'inscription, attendent leurs 3 nerveux Cheviots du Nord du pays mais aussi une bouteille de whisky single malt, offerte par la famille Fosters, des agriculteurs locaux qui produisent de l'énergie hydraulique et qui ont des filiales dans tout le pays.

Dans la deuxième course, vous voyez Heamish Mclean, malheureusement décédé le 21 novembre, alors qu'à l'âge de 82 ans, il essayait de préparer un jeune chien pour la nouvelle saison des "nursery".
Ce concours fait partie de la préqualification pour le Scottish National.

La Belgique a organisé trois fois le championnat européen de conduite de troupeau. Dans les années 90 à Hamont (97) et plus tard à Anvers (2013).
En 2003, il y a eu le championnat au domaine militaire de Schaffen. Le méga terrain en pente, a offert un excellent panorama, tant pour les participants que pour les spectateurs.
Le concours est connu comme le plus grand rassemblement de spectateurs que l'événement ait eu en Europe.
Les délégués de l'ISDS ont observé avec de grands yeux l'intérêt du public.
Quelque 7000 spectateurs étaient présents sur ce terrain fantastique. Malgré des débuts difficiles, organisationnels et pratiques (la pluie a entraîné une charge de travail et une pression supplémentaires), l'événement de 3 jours s'est transformé en un grand événement. Le dimanche, pas moins de 100 assistants étaient actifs : assistants de match, restauration, entrée, stuarts, gardiens de parking, etc.
Le gagnant a finalement été Mosse Magnusson de Suède avec Flinn
Flinn est issu des lignées de Johnny Wilson Spot et Rob, à l'époque également au sommet en Ecosse.
La possibilité d'entraîner les chiens quotidiennement, le paysage idéal pour ce sport,
Avec Jim et Davey, il a également connu un succès assez rapide dans ce domaine. Plus tard, de nombreux autres chiens ont suivi.
Dans les 2 fragments, vous voyez Mosse avec 2 chiens différents : au fantastique concours de Glen Lyon avec Moss et au championnat de la "Nursery" 2019 avec Don.
Le terrain de Glen Lyon, situé dans le parc naturel de Trossachs, est magnifique.
Faites attention à la durée de l'outrun (2m30sec) et à la vigilance des Cheviot hoggs ("yearlings" non couverts).
Une belle variation sur le thème est le "shoot" à la corde et le petit cercle dans lequel les 4 Cheviots doivent être séparé.
Cette compétition fait partie de la pré- qualification du championnat national écossais.
Dans le fragment 2, vous voyez Mosse et Don en finale du championnat national des pépinières 2019.
Les moutons à visage noir sont certainement imprévisibles, mais Mosse et Don gardent leur sang-froid jusqu'à la fin.

Scott Glen wins the Soldier Hollow Classic 2019 (Utah). He had already won the Meekertrial (Colorado).
Prize money for the winner: $10,000. Per trial to be precise.
In the long dark Canadian winters he prepares his dogs for the big championships in the United States. His Scottish-American colleagues do the same.
Considering the enormous distances, the life of a professional is "on the road" in summer and early autumn. In his motorhome, Scott travels the continent like many other handlers, with a few well-prepared collies. Ready to compete.

Registrations are by invitation. No run without credentials. European top handlers are also involved: either to judge or to participate.

The merino crossings in Utha are stiff and 'waiting' for the dog every time, at least when he walks through, the 'Christmas trees' give direction to keep a nice line.

The field, flat in run up, quickly rises to a steep wall where the dogs can choose a path to the left or right to get behind the sheep. Those who choose to poke through the ferns will soon lose track or the plants will slow down the dog in such a way that a good run quickly becomes impossible. Run 1 does not always run smoothly.

Flinn came out of the lines of Johnny Wilson Spot and Rob, at that time also at the top in Scotland.

Please note the duration of the outrun (2m30sec) and the sharpness of the Cheviot hoggs (uncovered yearlings).
Physically untrained dogs don't stand the least chance. The V-max level should be high. Super fast reaction of dog and handler are required. There is no time to think.
Nice variation on the theme is the shoot with rope and the small circle within which the 4 Cheviots have to be shoved.
