It can be big, it can be small
Belgium organised 3 European Sheepdog Championships. In the 90's in Hamont (97) and later in Antwerp (2013).
In 2003 there was the championship in the military domain of Schaffen. The sloping mega field, offered an excellent panorama, for both participants and spectators.
The competition is known as the biggest crowd puller that the event had in Europe.
The ISDS delegates were watching so much public interest with big eyes.
Some 7000 spectators were present on the fantastic pitch. Despite the difficult start, organizational and practical (the rain caused extra workload and pressure) the 3 day event grew into a great event. On Sunday, no less than 100 helpers were active: Match helpers, catering, entrance, stuarts, parking managers, etc., etc.
The winner was finally Mosse Magnusson from Sweden with Flinn
Flinn came out of the lines of Johnny Wilson Spot and Rob, at that time also at the top in Scotland.
The possibility to train dogs daily, the landscape ideal for the sport,
With Jim and Davey, he was fairly quickly successful there too. Many other dogs followed later.
In the 2 fragments you see Mosse with 2 different dogs: at the fantastic hilltrial in Glen Lyon with Moss and at the nursery championship 2019 with Don.
The Glen Lyon hill trial, situated in the Trossachs Nature Park, is a great highlight.
Please note the duration of the outrun (2m30sec) and the sharpness of the Cheviot hoggs (uncovered yearlings).
Physically untrained dogs don't stand the least chance. The V-max level should be high. Super fast reaction of dog and handler are required. There is no time to think.
Nice variation on the theme is the shoot with rope and the small circle within which the 4 Cheviots have to be shoved.
The competition is part of the prequalification for the Scottish national championship.
In the 2nd fragment you see Mosse and Don in the final of the national nursery championship 2019.
The blackface hoggs are certainly unpredictable, but Mosse and Don keep their cool until the end.
The pen is magnificent with an elegant, almost like a hoovercraft moving Don. Flanking as needed, but without giving too much room to keep pressure and moving forward when asked to pen them.
