The Rocky Mountains
The Rocky Mountains
Scott Glen wins the Soldier Hollow Classic 2019 (Utah). He had already won the Meekertrial (Colorado).
Prize money for the winner: $10,000. Per trial to be precise.
In the long dark Canadian winters he prepares his dogs for the big championships in the United States. His Scottish-American colleagues do the same.
Considering the enormous distances, the life of a professional is "on the road" in summer and early autumn. In his motorhome, Scott travels the continent like many other handlers, with a few well-prepared collies. Ready to compete.
Wyoming, Washington (state), and Montana are in the periphery of the Rocky Mountains the sheep states of the USA. The ranch sheep are mostly self-sufficient, and as also in Australia, often crosses of Merino's, hardened, weatherproof (cold or hot) and with a will of its own.
Soldier Hollow Classic in the village of Midway Utha (near Twin Peaks) is measured by spectator numbers, the largest, last edition there were about 28 000 paying spectators during the 3 day country fair-trial.
Distance for Scott (home Utha), about 1300 km. Winning is not something you just do.
Registrations are by invitation. No run without credentials. European top handlers are also involved: either to judge or to participate.
You will see Scott with Don on 2 races. Soldier Hollow (2014) and the American Championship (2013)
The merino crossings in Utha are stiff and 'waiting' for the dog every time, at least when he walks through, the 'Christmas trees' give direction to keep a nice line.
Pens on wheels.
Always correctly set up by cowboy/girl and dog you will see Scott and Don again in run 2.
Don "tient la route" to say it in beautiful French. Continental sheep with continental handling.
