Gairloch and District trials
Handlers, mainly from the Highlands and the islands of Mull, Skye and Lewis but also increasingly from Northern Ireland are competing against each other.
At registration their 3 nervous North Country Cheviots await as well as a bottle of single malt whisky, offered by the Fosters family, local hydro energy farmers with branches all over the country.
In our selection you will see 2 runs.
The field, flat in run up, quickly rises to a steep wall where the dogs can choose a path to the left or right to get behind the sheep. Those who choose to poke through the ferns will soon lose track or the plants will slow down the dog in such a way that a good run quickly becomes impossible. It is important to keep the dog and sheep "on the right track".
Run 1 does not always run smoothly.
In run 2 you will see Heamish Mclean, unfortunately deceased on 21 November, while at the age of 82 he was still trying to make a young dog race ready for the new nursery season.
The competition is part of the prequalification for the Scottish National.
