Inverlochlarig trial
.
Liam Neeson's rendition in the film of the same name has certainly contributed to the mystification of the character.
Kevin Howlett and his friends are organizing the 3rd weekend of July an absolute toptrial where you better not come unprepared. The atmosphere is friendly and familial.
The road to the starting point is a small road over a bridge along the river and from then on you are on your own with your dog.
The outrun is about 650 m steep uphill, the drive is rather limited and you have to pen in a pen, the size of 4 galvanized gates. Shedding is not necessary.
4 unmarked blackface ewes are not waiting for what's coming to them.
Lie down is far not the most important; the dog's own initiative to follow the right track in order not to lose the sheep in the rough terrain is essential. With come bye, away and lie down alone, you won't make it here. Experience with mountain trials is a must.
The trial works with the "entry on the field" principle. This means that you can register on location immediately after arrival. Not every handler is still ready to take a chance after discovering the terrain and the sheep!
Although it is an Open trial where there are points to be earned as prequalification for the Scottish National Championship, it is the locals who go home with the prizes.
Peter Martin is one of them.
As a full-time shepherd, his job is to assist others on a daily basis to collect the sheep from these mountains and then treat them. This can be worming, shaving, weaning etc.
The daily training that the dogs receive in this way both mentally and physically, makes them top fit to perform at any other smaller competition. Peter has of course often made it to the National single and brace team.
The local races are mostly blackface but also the North country cheviots are well represented in these areas.
